TALK ABSTRACT
Providing Support to the General Public by Communication Design:
A Case Study of Participatory Technology Assessment
In this talk, I provide an overview of the organization and activities of Center for the Study of Communication-Design (CSCD). CSCD is addressing the communication gaps, especially, among experts of different specialties and between experts and non-experts. CSCD sets three missions: Human Resource Development, Integration of the Humanities and the Sciences, and University-Society Coordination. For University-Society Coordination, CSCD conducts some activities, such as Art Area B1, CHI-Deli and Science shops.
Second, I introduce a case study of participatory Technology Assessment (pTA) known as World Wide Views on Global Warming (WWViews) in Japan. The guiding research question was “What did citizen participants learn through WWViews engagements?” I conducted surveys with participants of the event. I focused on three content learning areas: scientific understanding of climate change, political issues related to climate change, and citizenship. The case study shows that this event was a good opportunity to know and understand climate change, and empowered citizens to participate in social decision making. After the WWViews, participants expressed the desire to continue communications on Global Warming and involved others.
